Tokyo, Japan, November 21, 2025 – ArkEdge Space Inc. (“ArkEdge Space”), a Japanese space startup based in Tokyo that provides comprehensive solutions from planning and design to mass production and operation of micro-satellite constellations, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with the Glaciology Center, the Center for Climate Change and Ozone Layer Research, and the Environmental Monitoring Department within the Agency for Hydrometeorology under the Committee for Environmental Protection of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan. The signing took place at the COP30 Japan Pavilion in the presence of Kentaro Doi, Vice-Minister for the Global Environment at Japan’s Ministry of the Environment.
The MoU establishes a framework for joint research using satellite-image analysis to monitor glacier dynamics and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Background
Tajikistan is home to many of Central Asia’s most critical glaciers, which serve as vital sources of water for the region. Changes in glacier mass are key indicators for water-resource management and for assessing the impacts of climate change. Understanding GHG emissions, atmospheric particulate levels, and broader environmental conditions is also a high-priority challenge for achieving long-term sustainability.
ArkEdge Space will seek to contribute to Tajikistan’s climate-response and environmental-protection efforts by applying advanced satellite-data processing and analytical technologies.
Scope of the MoU
Joint Research Areas
・Satellite-based monitoring of glacier fluctuations
・Satellite observation of GHG emission levels
・Detection of airborne particulates and environmental pollution
・Sharing of advanced satellite-data processing methods and climate-modeling techniques
Knowledge Sharing and Technical Exchange
・Joint seminars, training programs, and workshops led by experts from both parties
・Mutual learning on satellite-data processing and climate-analysis methodologies
・Support for access to analytical tools and software
・Capacity-building through internship programs and opportunities for young researchers and specialists
Roles and Responsibilities
Tajikistan (Agency for Hydrometeorology)
・Providing existing datasets on glaciers, GHG emissions, and environmental pollution
・Identifying pilot sites and facilitating on-the-ground surveys
・Supporting the domestic and international dissemination of research outcomes
ArkEdge Space
・Providing satellite imagery and technical expertise
・Offering technical support for satellite-data analysis
・Supporting the design of joint projects related to glaciers, climate change, and atmospheric environments
・Exploring collaboration opportunities with international organizations, including JICA, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB)
Future Outlook
Through this MoU, the parties will deepen scientific research using satellite data and develop projects that serve as advanced international examples of environmental monitoring.
ArkEdge Space will continue to leverage its satellite-constellation technologies and data-analytics capabilities to support climate-change mitigation, water-resource management, and environmental protection in collaboration with the international community.
