Satellite VDES - The Advanced Maritime Information Infrastructure

What is Satellite VDES?

Satellite VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) is an advanced system of the existing AIS(Automatic Identification System). VDES enables bidirectional digital data exchange between ships at sea and the shore, which is made possible by the system including satellites. VDES enables bidirectional digital data exchange between ships at sea and the shore, establishing it as a next-generation infrastructure for maritime information.

Compared to AIS, VDES offers a wider coverage area with satellites, improved data exchange/processing speeds, 2-way communication capabilities, and greater flexibility in the types of information exchanged. It is expected to be utilized for broadcasting maritime safety information and supporting digital applications for maritime operations, contributing to safer navigation and the digitalization of maritime activities.

Use Case 1: High-Frequency Transmission of Maritime Safety Information at a Distance

Use Case 2: Efficient Port Operations Through Bidirectional Digital Data Exchange

Utilizing Maritime Data

By collecting maritime data, including AIS, frequently on a global scale through multiple satellites, VDES facilitates the monitoring of ship movements and enhances applications such as route verification.

ArkEdge Space’s VDES Satellite Series

  • Leveraging extensive expertise in diverse satellite development, we have uniquely developed a high-performance, cost-effective VDES satellite.
  • Starting in 2025, we will launch several demonstration satellites to verify the effectiveness of maritime information infrastructure using satellite VDES, and then provide commercial services using a newly constructed satellite constellation.
