Tokyo, Japan, March 31, 2025 — ArkEdge Space Inc. (“ArkEdge Space”), a Japanese space startup based in Tokyo that provides comprehensive solutions from planning and design to mass production and operation of micro-satellite constellations, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MUFG Bank, Ltd. (“MUFG”) and Shimizu Corporation. This strategic partnership aims to accelerate the development of new commercial applications in remote sensing by leveraging multi-wavelength satellite imagery and advanced analytic technologies.
ArkEdge Space is building a next-generation satellite constellation that includes hyperspectral Earth observation and VDES (VHF Data Exchange System) satellites for maritime communications. These technologies are designed to address pressing global challenges including climate change, land and ocean monitoring, and the digital transformation of marine industry.
In parallel, we are building a geospatial intelligence platform that integrates satellite imagery, IoT signals, and environmental data to detect and analyze ecological changes and associated risks. The platform collects, processes, and analyzes diverse datasets, and provides an intuitive user interface (UI) that enables users to easily visualize critical information. By applying advanced web tools and AI, this system empowers even non-expert users to utilize complex satellite data effectively. Businesses are enabled to evaluate and disclose risks and opportunities related to natural capital, and supporting practical application to conservation and sustainable initiatives.
ArkEdge Space has collaborated with MUFG, Shimizu Corporation, and other key partners on demonstration projects focused on greenhouse (GHG) monitoring. In future phases, the company aims to further leverage satellite data to quantify key environmental indicators, including, GHG emission reductions, total emissions and carbon absorption.
Together with our partners, we quantified CO2 reductions achieved through the use of alternative marine fuels such as ammonia. In addition, we monitored correlations of ground-based cameras and satellite data to provide objective and measurable insights.
Such initiatives are especially relevant under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS), which now applies to the maritime sector operators [1]. Satellite-based monitoring can streamline emission calculations and ensure data integrity—ultimately enabling accurate and verifiable reporting, and offer a scalable, transparent solution for regulatory compliance.
The technologies developed through this collaboration are being tested and deployed not only in Japan, but also across emerging markets, particularly in the Global South. Targeted applications include agricultural optimization, water resource management, climate monitoring, disaster response, maritime operations, and GHG tracking—helping communities build resilience through space-based intelligence.
Through continued partnerships such as this, ArkEdge Space remains committed to its mission:
“Empowering people with satellites for a prosperous future.”
